HOW WE PUT RELEVANT NGOs “ON THE RADAR” FOR A GLOBAL ENERGY COMPANY
Our client – a global energy company – lacked insight into external stakeholder views. This meant that a number of environmental NGOs were able to make considerable noise online about the client's perceived shortcomings. The board felt like they were constantly operating on the defensive, unable to proactively address sustainability issues.
Companies in the energy industry today need a 'social license' to operate – our client was well-aware of this fact. But not knowing how to deal with NGO actors was more than just a reputational threat in this case. It was also a major roadblock in the company's sustainability journey.
Alongside a research partner, COSYN performed a deep competitive analysis of over 100 environmental NGOs. We looked at their values and activities, as well as their current relationship and relevance to the client. Drawing from this data, we created a radar animation that categorized NGOs according to their potential for partnership.
Identifying NGOs with high relevancy and openness to cooperate opened many doors for our client. It meant that the company went from seeing these players as threats to building transformative partnerships with some. Not only did the client improve their public image, but they were also able to make genuine strides in sustainability.
HOW WE BROUGHT BORING SUSTAINABILITY REPORTS TO LIFE FOR A GLOBAL PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANY
For this global pharmaceutical company, sustainability lived confined to annual reports. Lacking a sustainability culture, the challenge was to make the topic top-of-mind to key stakeholders.
To get the client's sustainability strategy off the page and into real life, employee and leadership buy-in would be crucial. Our solution was to build regular stakeholder activation opportunities around the topic.
Instead of making these activities another 'to-do', we designed events that were fun and interactive. These included roundtables, debates and workshops with local politicians and guests from external sustainability organizations.
By keeping people involved in the discussion, sustainability became embedded in employee experience rather than stuck in annual reports. Internal surveys indicated a massive improvement on the knowledge and engagement with sustainability. Plus, the company got significant positive press in this area!
